Charnwood Carnival: 3rd yearThe 3rd year of the Charnwood Carnival was bigger and better than ever before.
"The Carnival is a great example of how people getting together are able to achieve great things" Mary said. "The Carnival has previously had support through a grant from the ACT Government but has now developed enough momentum to continue under its own steam and is funded with the assistance of many local businesses." "The Carnival is not a fete, but a community day, a day for families and friends to get together and enjoy themselves" Mary continued. "The Carnival is an initiative of the Charnwood Primary and Pre-school and St Thomas Aquinas Primary School. It is supported by the respective principals Peter Ross and John Bourke, and the organising committee is jointly co-ordinated by community activists Janette O'Sullivan and Michael Pilbrow, who are supported by members of the respective P&C and P&F Associations." Over 20 community groups including the Mount Rogers Scout group, Pegasus, Belconnen Community Service, the Australian Breastfeeding Association and the Christian Life Centre were involved. On the day Cheryl Sahariv managed and co-ordinated over 110 volunteers who all played their role in making the event a great success with an estimated attendance of 5,000 during the afternoon. A new innovation this year was the "Mullet" competition co-judged by Mary Porter. The winner was 2 year-old Jayden Priestly and the People's Choice Award went to Tyron Catania who had travelled from Queanbeyan with his father Ronnie, who also has a great mullet.
