NEW $4 MILLION FLYNN CHILDCARE CENTRE OPENS ITS DOORS

More than 100 children have officially christened Flynn’s new $4 million childcare facility, which opened its doors this week.

ACT Minister for Community Services Joy Burch said the new Alkira Childcare Centre is part of the ACT Government’s $8 million redevelopment of the former Flynn Primary School site.

“The new childcare centre has the capacity for 115 children and it has effectively filled that capacity already,” Ms Burch said.

“Enrolments in the centre, largely by families living in the suburb of Flynn, have been so popular that even at the start date there are only four spots left on Mondays and Fridays.”

Ms Burch said that since the redevelopment began, many local parents and carers had looked forward to the opening of the centre because it offered their children the opportunity to be cared for, and spend their days, learning in a high-quality modern environment close to home.

Throughout the construction phase over the past two years, the Flynn community has been involved in the design and restoration work.

“We have worked closely with the community to understand their needs for the site.

“The school was built in the 1970s and we have worked with its original architect to ensure that the refurbishments blend seamlessly with the original structure.”

The childcare centre exceeds all national quality standards and features landscaped and shaded garden areas for the children to enjoy outside play year round.

“A lot of fun will be had at the centre in the years to come. It’s a great facility that will provide a safe and enjoyable environment where local children will blossom.”

Refurbishment of the remainder the site, which will house community organisations, is continuing and is expected to be completed within the next six months.
