MINISTER THANKS ESA STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS FOR JOB WELL DONE

    An ACT Government Media Release

Simon Corbell MLA, September 6, 2010

MINISTER THANKS ESA STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS FOR JOB WELL DONE

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell, has today thanked all the emergency services workers and volunteers who provided assistance over the weekend to Canberrans affected by wild weather.

"This weekend has seen some wet and windy weather and almost 400 calls for help were received by members of the community," Mr Corbell said.

"Members of the ACT State Emergency Service (SES), Rural Fire Service (RFS) and ACT Fire Brigade (ACTFB) have dedicated their weekend to helping others in need and for this I would like to extend my thanks on behalf of the ACT community."

The ACT Emergency Services Agency received 372 calls for assistance, ranging from minor leaking to fallen trees and roof damage.

"These volunteers work tirelessly and for little or no thanks, just to ensure that others in need receive assistance that is required to get through a difficult time," Mr Corbell said.

"The workers also put their own personal lives on hold to ensure every call for help is answered and dealt with as quickly as possible. This is also done in trying conditions that most other people avoid.

"ACT emergency services workers receive a high level of training and I am pleased to see that all jobs have been completed in a professional manner."

Mr Corbell echoed comments made by ESA Commissioner, Mark Crosweller, urging Canberrans to ensure their properties are storm safe.

"Clearing gutters, making sure surrounding trees and plants are maintained, loose objects are secured and roof tiles are well maintained are all ways that individuals can ensure they are best prepared to weather a storm," he said.
