An ACT Government Media Release
Jon Stanhope MLA, August 24, 2010 OWNPLACE RECOGNISED AT INDUSTRY AWARDSThe ACT Government's affordable housing initiative, OwnPlace has again received recognition for excellence in affordable design, this time at the Urban Development Institute of Australia's (UDIA) NSW/ACT Awards for Excellence. The OwnPlace program, which is delivered by the Government's Land Development Agency and a panel of local builders, was awarded a commendation award for Affordable Development. Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said it was the second industry award for the program in two months. "It is great to see industry recognition being given to the ACT Government's OwnPlace program, which delivers quality, affordable house and land packages for Canberrans," Mr Stanhope said. "Since July 2008, 100 OwnPlace homes have been completed and 147 are currently under construction. "This is the second time OwnPlace has been recognised with an industry award. In June, OwnPlace was awarded the Property Council of Australia's National Innovation and Excellence Award for Government Leadership. "Congratulations to the Land Development Agency and all of the builders taking part in OwnPlace for helping more Canberrans realise the dream of owning their own home," Mr Stanhope said. In presenting the award, UDIA judges praised the innovative and integrated approach of the scheme in delivering quality affordable homes. The judges said, "OwnPlace is a benchmark affordable housing initiative which is a model for all housing agencies to follow. The objectives are being consistently achieved with quality five star housing products fully integrated within the release area development. The judges commend other state agencies to study the initiative and the benefits accruing to all stakeholders." Chief Executive of the Land Development Agency, John Robertson, said OwnPlace was integral to the ACT Government's Affordable Housing Action Plan. "OwnPlace is the first program of its kind in Australia and we are thrilled to be recognised with another industry award."
