PORTER BOWLED OVER BY BROADBAND SENIORS KIOSK OPENING

    An ACT Government Media Release

    Mary Porter AM MLA,

PORTER BOWLED OVER BY BROADBAND SENIORS KIOSK OPENING

Today, Ms Mary Porter AM MLA, Member for Ginninderra, opened a Broadband for Seniors Kiosk at the Belconnen Bowling Club, Hawker.

“Broadband is the one of the modern faces of social inclusion,” Ms Porter said. “Access to information, the speed and scope of communication that is available over the internet has become an important means of keeping us all in touch with each other.”

“Broadband for Seniors is part of a $15m Australian Government initiative to increase the skills of older Australians using computers and the internet,” Ms Porter said.

“The aim is to help older members of the community become better connected, enabling them to discover a whole new social experience on the web.”

The Belconnen Bowling Club Broadband for Seniors Kiosk comprises two computers with broadband access for use by older members of our local community. Training and support to those who are new to computers and the internet will be offered.

The Bowling Club President, Nicole Mengel said the new Seniors Kiosk will assist members to keep in contact with their families who are interstate and overseas, along with offering access to the wealth of information available online.

“I was delighted to open this Broadband for Seniors Kiosk at the Belconnen Bowling Club. I am patron of this vibrant community club, and completely support this Federal Government initiative,” Ms Porter concluded.

Information on kiosk hours, training and session bookings can be obtained from the Belconnen Bowling Club’s staff on 6278 3376.

Community centres, club or other seniors’ organisations interested in hosting a free kiosk can find more information, and can register their interest, at the following website: http://www.necseniors.net.au.
