PORTER OPENS NEW COMMUNITY PARK IN COOK

    An ACT Government Media Release

Mary Porter AM MLA, July 15, 2010

PORTER OPENS NEW COMMUNITY PARK IN COOK

Today, Mary Porter AM MLA, Member for Ginninderra, officially opened the new community park in Cook.

“Cook is the first of eight new community parks to be completed as part of the ACT Government’s $2.4 million investment into revitalising former school sites,” said Ms Porter.

“The Cook Community Park retains and builds on existing elements of this former school site by keeping The Peace Garden, created by former Year 6 students during the International Year of Peace; utilising the shade sail which was purchased by the former Parents Association of the school; and some existing, well loved play equipment has been refurbished to Australian Standards. “

“Building on these features, the park offers hours of play with a new double swing, play train and spring rocker and painted spirals and handball squares which give new life to concreted areas and encourage active play.

“Fitness equipment including chin up bars, parallel bars, a jump touch and a leg curl have been installed to provide people of all ages with a chance to improve their health and fitness.

“The Cook Community Park is complete with sheltered barbeque and picnic settings, set amongst the planting of Manchurian pear trees, creating a special space for social gatherings and community events.

Cook Community Park is one of eight new community parks to be constructed across the ACT located at former school sites of Weston, Rivett, Village Creek, Mt Neighbour, Holt, Chifley, and Macarthur.

“I am pleased to officially open Cook Community Park and I wish the children, carers and local community many enjoyable hours of healthy fun and recreation in the new space,” said Ms Porter.
