SCOUTING OUT A GOOD HALL

    An ACT Government Media Release

Mary Porter AM MLA, June 5, 2010

    SCOUTING OUT A GOOD HALL

Tonight, Mary Porter AM MLA, Member for Ginninderra, attended a Gala Benefit Dinner and Auction hosted by the ACT Branch of Scouts Australia. The event will raise funds to aid in rebuilding the Stromlo Forest Scout Hall that was destroyed in the 2003 Canberra bushfires.

“Tonight has been a wonderful opportunity for the ACT Community and the ACT Government to continue to support Scouting Australia in assisting young people in becoming self fulfilled individuals who play constructive roles in society,” said Ms Porter.

“As I said when I turned the sod on this hall in April, the rebuilding of this facility is another step in a process of restoration that has been ongoing since 2003, not only for the local scout group but for the whole community.”

Ms Porter presented a cheque for $5 000 to Scouts Australia, on behalf of the ACT Government in support of this project.

Ms Porter paid tribute to the ongoing hard work and dedication of members of the Scouting community, especially the Chief Commissioner of Scouts Australia in the ACT, Mr Neville Tomkins.

“The ACT Government is delighted to be able to assist the ACT Scouting movement to recognise the vital part they play in Canberra’s community. This donation adds to $200,000 that was provided to the ACT Scouts by the ACT Government to help rebuild Camp Cottermouth, a place that has seen several generations of young Canberrans participate in the many activities the scouting movement has to offer.” Ms Porter said.

“This is another step in the community recovery from the 2003 bushfires and demonstrates the strong partnership between the ACT Government and the Scouting community in the ACT,” said Ms Porter.
