PORTER OPENS EXHIBITION THAT INSPIRES CHANGE

    An ACT Government Media Release

Mary Porter AM MLA, May 28, 2010

PORTER OPENS EXHIBITION THAT INSPIRES CHANGE

Tonight, Ms Mary Porter MLA, Member for Ginninderra, opened the Earth Connections Exhibition at the Belconnen Arts Centre.

“Earth Connections expresses the idea that treating our world carelessly can and will cause a ripple affect throughout the system, resulting in great harm to humans, as well as all life,” Ms Porter said.

This exciting exhibition has been curated for World Environment Day to mark a special time in contemporary Australia. Earth Connections is an exhibition for the times – to encourage people to persevere and keep making changes.

“Earth Connections is subtle and multi-faceted, leaving its meaning to be determined by the eye and mind of the beholder, it is encouraging us to develop a more informed and aware relationship with the earth, thus reduce the detrimental effects of the current impact of our practices on the environment.”

People can view the exhibition at the Belconnen Art Centre, open from Tuesday until Sunday, with the opening hours from 10:00am to 6:00pm.

“While many of the artists comment on the damage that has been and continues to be done to the environment, they choose not to use shock imagery, but rather explore the issue in a more delicate, beautiful and sometimes in an amusing or ironic way,” Ms Porter said.

“Earth Connections recognises what Indigenous Australians have known for thousands of years. This certainly was my experience when I lived and worked with remote indigenous communities in the Top End of the NT. I found that Indigenous people had a deep, well grounded appreciation and understanding of their environment and how to care for and respect it. “

The Exhibition will run until Sunday 20 June.
