An ACT Government Media Release
Mary Porter AM MLA, May 3, 2010 PORTER KICKS STARTS MOTORCYCLE RELAY FOR CANCERToday Mary Porter MLA launched the Canberra leg of the second annual Cancer Council Adventure Ride, presenting a $2,000 donation from the ACT Government to the Cancer Council ACT. The relay-style motorbike ride kicked off in Brisbane on 24 April and will cover 5,000 kilometres and four states with the aim to raise $100,000 by the time the riders reach Perth on 22 May. “I am excited that the ride has grown by more than 300 per cent in only its second year”, Ms Porter said. “Last year I remember the event had around 120 motorcyclists who travelled from Brisbane to the Victorian border, raising over $10,000,” she said. “This year, with more than 500 riders, they are riding from Brisbane all the way to Perth and increasing their fundraising target by more than $90,000!” At points along the route, riders will exchange a large yellow spanner, much like the Olympic torch relay. Cancer survivors will be present at the ‘spanner ceremonies’ to celebrate their lives, and their hope for a cancer-free future. Following Ms Porter’s presentation of a large novelty cheque for a $2,000 donation, a group of ACT motorbike riders started their engines in the Legislative Assembly forecourt to join the other riders on their way to Perth.
