Submitted by Charles Njora on Mon, 23/08/2010 - 11:45am.
An ACT Government Media Release
Mary Porter AM MLA, April 21, 2010 PORTER LAUNCHES MILLION PAWS WALKToday, Ms Mary Porter MLA, Member for Ginninderra, launched the RSPCA’s Million Paws Walk to be held at Commonwealth Park on Sunday 16 May 2010. The annual fundraising event is now in its 16th year and is crucial in supporting the ongoing work of the RSPCA. “The RSPCA is well-known to thousands of Canberrans through its rescue, shelter and re-homing of domestic animals,” said Ms Porter. “It also rescues and cares for injured wildlife, investigates allegations of cruelty, provides input to the development of legislation and plays a critical role in raising community awareness about animal welfare.” Ms Porter recently raised a motion in the Legislative Assembly that addressed responsible pet ownership and has an ongoing interest in animal welfare in the ACT. “Last year over 9000 people and 3500 dogs attended the Million Paws Walk and the RSPCA managed to raise $150,000 in the ACT and $1 million nationally. “The funds raised here in the ACT help operate the RSPCA’s shelter at Weston, as well as support their education campaigns and inspectorate services, so I urge people to show their support and participate in the event,” Ms Porter noted. “I plan to join the walk with my new dog, Lola, recently obtained from the RSPCA shelter.” Ms Porter said the ACT Government has a close relationship with the RSPCA. “We have doubled funding to the RSPCA over the last 18 months so they now receive $400,000 each year. In the second half of 2009 additional emergency payments were also made to the RSPCA, totalling a further $400,000, allowing the RSPCA to maintain the high level of service it provides to the ACT community. “I visited the RSPCA a few weeks ago and I and the Government are in constant contact with them in relation to policy aimed at improving animal welfare in the ACT. “The Government has also provided $10,000 in sponsorship for the Million Paws Walk over the past two years.” Ms Porter said the Million Paws Walk commences at Stage 88 at 11 am on Sunday 16 May 2010 and proceeds clockwise around the central basin of Lake Burley Griffin. “The walk usually goes for about an hour and provides a good opportunity to get out and about with your pet and enjoy the company of other pet owners. A variety of entertainment will be offered at Stage 88 after the walk. “I hope to be there with my dog Lola, but I remind Canberrans that they do not need a dog to walk. Simply registering and participating in the walk will assist RSPCA’s animal welfare efforts. For more information visit www.millionpawswalk.com.au or call the RSPCA on 6287 8100.” Statement Ends »
