An ACT Government Media Release
Mary Porter AM MLA, March 17, 2010 MAN-KIND’S FUNDAMENTAL TESTMary Porter AM MLA, Member for Ginninderra, is delighted that the Legislative Assembly passed a motion recognising the importance of domestic animal welfare. “There have been several disturbing trends in respect to domestic animal welfare in this jurisdiction in recent times. “There have been several incidences of irresponsible domestic animal ownership. For example, there have been incidences of unrestrained dogs attacking other companion animals. There has also been an increase, particularly last Christmas, of abandoned domestic animals. Increasingly, it seems that there is a lack of understanding of responsibility associated with pet ownership,” Ms Porter asserted. “This demonstrates the continuing need for Government and community organisations to be active in promoting responsible pet ownership.”. “Important work has been done and will continue to be done to set parameters within which owner’s of companion animals may operate.” “Too often, I see dogs roaming free when they should be in the proper care of their owner. There was a recent attack in my electorate on a companion animal by a dog that had been allowed to run free. Owners must take responsibility for their domestic animals – in no way should a companion animal threaten the safety or wellbeing of another person or indeed another person’s pet,” Ms Porter said. “There have also been disturbing acts of cruelty against domestic animals. Some studies have suggested that there may be a link between acts of cruelty perpetrated by an individual against animals and the likelihood of subsequently committing violent acts against human beings. What, indeed, does this escalation say for where we are heading as a community? “Whilst disturbing, these incidences remain isolated. However, it is clear that we must continue to cultivate an understanding that we have a responsibility to those who are effectively at our mercy. Our response to this challenge will say much for us as a community.” “The support this motion gained today says much for the progress we have made as a community. Indeed, it says much for the progress made by this civilisation,” Ms Porter said. Statement Ends »
