GOVERNMENT CALLS FOR HELP TO CONDUCT PLATYPUS CENSUS

    An ACT Government Media Release

Simon Corbell MLA, August 5, 2010

GOVERNMENT CALLS FOR HELP TO CONDUCT PLATYPUS CENSUS

Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Water, Simon Corbell today encouraged Canberrans to help our local environment by reporting platypus sightings to Upper Murrumbidgee & ACT Waterwatch.

"The platypus is one of the world's most unusual animals and little is known about the current status in the wild of this iconic Australian species," Mr Corbell said.

"Anecdotal evidence indicates that platypus numbers have declined or disappeared in numerous places across the species' range.

"That is why we are seeking community assistance to collect important information about platypus sightings that can be used to plan future monitoring of populations. It is also a great way for locals to take part and assist platypus conservation in our region."

Throughout the month of August, members of the public are being asked to complete a Platypus Census Sheet, available online at http://www.act.waterwatch.org.au/ or in The Chronicle. Paper forms should be sent to Upper Murrumbidgee & ACT Waterwatch, GPO Box 158, Canberra, ACT, 2601

The information collected will help establish baseline information about the current status of platypus populations and develop mechanisms for their future monitoring.

As a top predator in freshwater ecosystems, the platypus is an excellent indicator of waterway health. Consequently, monitoring of platypus populations provides a valuable tool for measuring the impact of habitat rehabilitation work along rivers and creeks.

"Platypus have been known to be present fairly close to residential areas and are reasonably easy to spot," Mr Corbell said. "They can be seen in places where the water surface is fairly flat and calm, so ripples created when the animals swim and dive stand out," Mr Corbell said.

"Most sightings have been when locals are out and about during their routine walk, jog or cycle ride."
