Jon Stanhope MLA, August 3, 2010 GARRETT PLANTS QUEENSLAND KAURI AT ARBORETUMFederal Environment Protection Minister Peter Garrett joined Chief Minister Jon Stanhope in the planting of a Queensland Kauri at the National Arboretum today. The Agathis Robusta, commonly known as the Queensland Kauri, joins many other native trees which have been planted by visiting dignitaries and world leaders in the Arboretum's formal Central Valley. The Queensland Kauri, which grows naturally on Fraser Island and around Maryborough in Queensland, is a large evergreen that grows to a height of up to 50 metres. "It is a great pleasure to be joined today by Minister Garrett to plant the newest addition to the "Mr Garrett has taken a strong and passionate stance on environmental issues throughout his career and it is fantastic to have someone of his profile and credentials plant a tree in the National Arboretum. "The Government's vision for the Arboretum is to create a unique and lasting legacy for Canberra and the Australian community. "By its official opening in 2013 the Arboretum will showcase 100 forests of rare and endangered species from across the globe, as well as a mosaic of permanent gardens. "By the end of this year the site will be home to 70 forests. "I encourage Canberrans and visitors to Canberra to enjoy this national attraction, even in its developing stages, by taking a walk through the Arboretum or by joining one of the occasional guided tours."
