An ACT Government Media Release
Jon Stanhope MLA, July 21, 2010 CCTV CAMERAS TO CURB ILLEGAL DUMPINGThe ACT Government is installing new Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at 24-hour recycling centres in an effort to curb illegal dumping and the associated clean-up costs, Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services Jon Stanhope, said today The ACT Government manages six drop-off recycling centres which collectively accept over 3700 tonnes of recyclables each year. However some Canberrans are using the centres illegally to dump items such as cooking oil, clothing, furniture, computers, TVs and whitegoods. Mr Stanhope said the cameras would help to reduce the incidence of dumping and identify offenders. "Cameras are being installed at known hot spots at recycling centres to discourage illegal dumping," Mr Stanhope said. "The cameras will help to deter people from illegal dumping and identify offenders so fines can be issued. "Those caught dumping will be issued with fines of up to $11,000 for individuals and $60,500 for corporations. "Illegal dumping is costly to clean up and an environmental hazard for staff and the community. Hazardous materials can also contaminate other recyclables. "The community can assist by reporting illegal dumping to Canberra Connect on 13 22 81." The drop-off recycling centres are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and accept materials free-of-charge such as paper, glass jars, plastic bottles and aluminium cans. They are located in Belconnen, Mitchell, Phillip and Tuggeranong. A range of other materials are accepted free-of-charge at the Mitchell and Mugga Lane Resource Recovery Centres.
