Simon Corbell MLA, July 19, 2010 ATTORNEY GENERAL WELCOMES ACT'S NEWEST MAGISTRATE TO THE BENCHAttorney General, Simon Corbell, has welcomed the ACT's newest Magistrate to the bench during a ceremonial sitting at the Magistrates Court today. "It is with great pleasure that I officially welcome Lorriane Walker to the ACT Magistrates Court," Mr Corbell said. "Ms Walker comes with significant experience in the legal profession, and also has a strong background in legal education. "This experience will equip Ms Walker with the knowledge and skills that will be required to meet the day-to-day challenges of the court." Ms Walker has extensive experience in her 23 years in the profession including being a partner of a law firm, a crown prosecutor, a solicitor, and a legal officer in the Royal Australian Air Force. Mr Corbell was joined by President of the ACT Law Society, Athol Opas, and Bar Association President, Stuart Pilkinton, who also addressed the court. Lorraine Walker was appointed to the ACT Magistrates Court in April to fill the vacancy created when Magistrate John Burns was appointed ACT Chief Magistrate. "It is also pleasing to see Ms Walker come to the position of Magistrate with a detailed knowledge of the local community and ACT justice system," Mr Corbell said. "I look forward to working with Magistrate Walker in the future, to ensure that the court continues to provide a high level of service to the people of the ACT," he said.
