HOME ENERGY ACTION KITS PROVE POPULAR WITH CANBERRANS

Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Water, Simon Corbell, has today announced additional Home Energy Action Kits to cope with strong demand since their launch earlier this month.

"Public demand for these kits has been extremely strong since they were launched and made available at all ACT public libraries," Mr Corbell said.

"To address this demand and the resulting growing waiting lists, another nine kits will be sent out this week to the libraries, to bring the total number to 27 and help meet demand."

The Home Energy Action Kit contains equipment, instructions and worksheets to help residents find practical ways to save energy around the home and reduce energy bills.

    It contains:

A power meter to measure energy consumption and running costs of appliances.
An infrared thermometer to measure fridge, freezer and hot water temperatures.
A compass to identify the orientation of the home and passive solar heating opportunities.
A stopwatch to measure shower and tap flow rates.
Instructions on using the equipment and worksheets to calculate your home energy efficiency.
A Home Energy Action Plan to record actions you will take to save energy and reduce bills.
"I strongly encourage people who borrow the kits to also complete the brief survey to help us assess the usefulness of the equipment and instructions," Mr Corbell said.

"In this trial phase for the kits, it is important that we get as much information as possible on how helpful the kits are and any suggestions for improving them."

Anyone wanting further advice after using the kit on how they can reduce energy use at home can call the ACT Government Home Energy Advice Team on 6260 6165 to discuss the option of having a professional ACT Energy Wise audit.
