    ARCHIVES ACT PROVING POPULAR

Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, John Hargreaves, today said that the new Archives ACT was proving extremely popular with the community.

From July 1 2008, the Canberra community has been able to access the Territory's archives and records dating back 20 years and earlier.

"Archives ACT is a new initiative of the ACT Government which enables the public to access ACT Government records and archives.

"Since the opening of Archives ACT on 1July 2008, there had been a several enquires per week for access to older ACT Government records.

"These enquiries range from simple to extremely complex. Many files had been identified and retrieved from agency record repositories and delivered to the Archives ACT Reading Room.

"The community can also make enquires and gain access to Government records via the Archives ACT website.

"A wide and varied assortment of information regarding the Canberra community can be discovered in the ACT Government's archives, covering areas such as social, cultural and sporting history.

"People interested in accessing these records can do so by visiting the Archives ACT website at http://www.archives.act.gov.au/," said Minister Hargreaves.
