West Belconnen health centre feasibility study

The prospect of a health centre in West Belconnen is closer to being a reality following the recent completion of a feasibility study that was funded by the ACT Government.

In response to the lack of medical services in the area, a steering committee was established in October 2004. Since then a group of volunteer community activists, led by local residents Roger Nicoll and Michael Pilbrow, have worked to develop a co-operative model that will bring better health outcomes for West Belconnen.

Progress was outlined to an enthusiastic public meeting in late February. Discussions are well advanced to lease premises in the former Charnwood High School and expressions of interest have been received from 6 GP's who are keen to practice in the new centre.

Speaking after the public meeting Mary Porter, a foundation member of the steering committee and now a patron, said "This is a fantastic example of the community recognising a need and coming together to develop a solution. This is the sort of thing that makes Canberra such a great place to live."
