An ACT Government Media Release
John Hargreaves MLA, 5 August 2008 EXPERT ADVICE KEY TO URBAN FOREST'S RENEWALMinister for Territory and Municipal Services, John Hargreaves, today announced the establishment of an Expert Reference Group that will help develop and guide a strategy to renew Canberra's aging urban forest. "I am pleased to announce the formation of an Expert Reference Group which will play a key role in the development of a strategy toward the renewal of Canberra's urban forest," said Mr Hargreaves. "Canberra's urban forest stands as a testimony to the vision and dedication of a number of people involved in the design and building of Canberra. The urban forest is an essential part of Canberra and its unique character as the bush capital. "Unfortunately, trees don't live forever, and many of our trees are now nearing the end of their lives. "The expert group will provide the specific advice needed to assist with the management of our unique treescape into the future under the Urban Forest Renewal Program. Australian National University Associate Professor Cris Brack, who has been appointed to the reference group, has welcomed the program highlighting its importance as a necessary step in planning for the replacement and continued management of Canberra's street and park trees. "Our urban forest is essential to the vitality and look of our city and has benefits beyond the aesthetic such as environmental and economic benefits that further heighten its importance," said Mr Brack. "In order to leave a legacy for future generations, we need to plan for a replacement forest better able to cope with a predicted dryer climate. The Expert Reference Group will have an essential role and I am pleased to be a part of it. The Expert Reference Group consists of 12 members across a range of disciplines including forestry, landscape architecture, climate change, horticulture, environment, heritage, and planning. The group will meet for the first time at the end of August. Early tasks will involve assisting in the development of guiding principles for the renewal of the urban forest and the development of a communication program that informs the community about the need to undertake renewal of the urban forest.
