A restful and safe festive season

I am sure everyone is looking forward to a break over the holiday season and I’m glad that the Federal election is behind us.

It will be interesting to see what long term affect the change of Government at the Federal level will have on the ACT.

I am pleased, of course, about the commitments made regarding education and skills development. I am sure all of us are relieved that at last Australia will be a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol, we have no time to waste as far as arresting Climate Change is concerned.

With a more favourable environment, the ACT Government will now reintroduce legislation in relation to gay law reform and civil unions.

As you know John Hargreaves, Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, has released a new ACTION timetable and route information for comment. You can access the information and make a comment through http://www.action.act.gov.au/

A number of constituents have already been in touch with me regarding the suggested new routes and I would strongly encourage you to access the site and examine the proposals carefully.

I am pleased to see the promised funds being spent on upgrades and other improvements to primary high schools and colleges in my electorate and look forward to the added benefit of the support that the Rudd Government is offering in this regard.

A promised new car park has been recently opened at the Canberra Hospital for staff, and parking has now been rearranged to provide accessible and close parking for visitors and staff.

Obviously it will take a little while for everyone to get used to the new arrangements, however, I do trust that it will relieve much of the frustration that patients and visitors have approached me about in the past.

What a wonderful ending to a difficult year to hear and see the rain again! Let us hope that summer rain will continue and help us avoid any further restriction.

Now all the busyness of the Federal elections is over, and as soon as the holiday season draws to a close, you will see me out and about at my usual Mobile Office venues. Please consult my homepage of this web for the dates and times etc.

Thank you to everyone who contacted me during 2007 with your various concerns and suggestions. I look forward to a busy 2008.

I do trust that you all have a restful and safe festive season.

Kind regards

Mary Porter
